 Extending Coverage

Extension of Coverage for a Non-Registered semester (Summer Session, Fall, or Spring) is for students who do not plan to register for the next consecutive semester in which they were assessed the Student Insurance fee.

Who is eligible for an extension of coverage?

  • An Extension of Coverage is available for students who were assessed the Student Health Insurance fee in the prior semester.
  • Students who were not covered in the prior semester or those who were already on an Extension of Coverage during the prior semester are not eligible for an Extension.
  • Insured students who do not plan to enroll for classes for the next consecutive semester may elect to extend their coverage for themselves and for their dependents for one semester beyond the last enrolled semester.
  • Students graduating from the university may elect to extend coverage for one or two semesters.

How much does an extension of coverage cost?

  • The Extension semester cost is the same as any other semester.
  • Premiums for both semesters must be paid at the time of application.
  • If a two semester extension is requested and later you find you do not need the extension of coverage for the second semester, notify the Student Insurance office in writing by the ending date of the first semester, stating you do not need the second semester of coverage. Your premium for the second semester will be refunded.

How do I apply for an extension of coverage?

  • In order to extend your coverage you must complete an Application for Extension, which can be found on the Download Extension of Coverage Forms page, and submit payment to the Student Insurance Office during the Enrollment/Change Period for the semester you wish to extend.
  • The Application for Extension can be  faxed or mailed to the Student Insurance office.
  • Either way, you must submit your application and payment by the last day of the Student Insurance Enrollment/ Change Period for the semester you have applied.
